Explanation

Corrypt is an interesting 2D puzzle game. You start of without instructions and need to figure out the game as you play. The level design was really well done in the beginning of the game, showing the player the mechanics by putting an obstacle in the players way that they need to face to continue, guiding the player to one of the main mechanics of the game.

Mechanically this game is really interesting. Your goal is to collect Mushrooms which you use to buy magic, Keys which you use to open doors, and Score Gems which is how you beat the game. Stopping you in your path are Crates which you move by going near them. When in range the crates attach to you and move with the character in the direction of the side your attach too. There are also walls stopping your progression which is where the magic system come into play. The magic mechanic lets you pick a tile and make it permanent in every map.

There are NPCs in the game that give you small goals and others that are more like obstacles. The ones that look like blue mushrooms, mirror player movement and the one that look like arrow head move forward until they hit an obstacle. They are use to up the difficulty of the puzzles as you progress.

Dynamics

Giving player an ability that alters the map need limitations so they don’t break the game. You need to be careful how you place boxes because you can get stuck. To get more magic uses, you need to spend more mushrooms each purchase so you need to be careful how you spend them.

Additional Notes

The magic mechanic of altering the map permanently is interesting but can break the game since it didn't restrict the player from making game breaking changes like destroying objectives you need or blocking off path permanently. You don’t need to tell the player how to play. Instead you can show them the mechanics through level design like the first two initial maps of the game. There are still interesting way to improve on old school games like Sokoban. Using enemy movement to solve puzzles is an interesting to add different touches to the puzzles. The music changes as the world get more chaotic. It make the changes in the world feel more serous.

Similar Games

Sokoban is similar because you push boxes to solve puzzles.
